Cultural Expression through Interdisciplinary Art, Design and PE

How can we express culture through dance, art and design? How do we understand the role, purpose and elements of cultural celebrations? Grades 9 and 10 have danced their way into exploring personal and cultural expression in their interdisciplinary unit for Physical Education, Art and Design.

After two days of workshops to learn the basics of salsa, bachata and reggaeton with a professional Latin dance coach from Columbia, students researched the history, music and style of their chosen dance to look for inspiration. They then choreographed their own Latin dances inspired by their learning. In art and design, students created advertisements and promotional videos in the build up to the final competition and culmination of their unit - the VIS Latin Dance Festival!
