Grade 1 Who We Are

Grade 1 has been developing their cultural proficiency by exploring and celebrating our differences. They read the beautiful children’s picture book, More Than Peach by Bellen Woodard, the pioneer of ‘skin colour’ crayons and discovered the multiple shades of skin tone we all have using the Colours of the World Crayolas. After drawing pictures of themselves, the students engaged in deep discussion about their personal stories about their families and learnt the basic principles of the science behind the different colours of our skin.

This discussion developed into a desire to create their own skin tones using different paints and mixing until they got the correct shade. Grade 1 teacher Ms. Mirah reflects, “it was such a fantastic experience to watch the students discover the different shades and realise that they are their own unique colour skin tone and how we are all a mix of different shades of colour. Students now continue to use the crayons when drawing people and they always draw a mix of different shades for all the different people."
