MYP students explored the art and symbolism of India, combining art, design, and physical education into one interdisciplinary unit that culminated in a celebration of cultural expression. They learned about different regions and cultural traditions across India, using those ideas to inspire their own artwork and movements. At first, some students felt a little unsure because the culture was new to them. But as they learned more, they became excited and really dove into this collaborative learning experience. This project helped students improve their creativity, physical skills, understanding of other cultures, and confidence. For example, students learned about beautiful shapes and patterns in Indian art – like the lotus flower – and used those shapes to inspire their own movements. It was wonderful to see how art and movement sparked students’ curiosity about the world!
“Planning the routine was sometimes difficult, but the excitement of performing made it worthwhile. The stress disappeared because everyone was involved and the music was upbeat. Comparing our dance to those of our peers gave us confidence. We were all in it together and no one was judgemental. It was more of a celebration than an actual competition.” – grade 6 student.
