Global Citizenship at VIS

VIS strives to promote empathy and belonging within our school community and beyond.

Global Citizenship

VIS acknowledges the intersectionality of global citizenship and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and therefore we do not have separate statements.

We refer to the language from our mission statement, “culturally proficient human being,” to capture the essence of that intersection. The definition is based on Dr. Eeqbal Hassim’s  characteristics of a “transcultural” human being.

Cultural proficiency at VIS

VIS refers to Dr. Eeqbal Hassim’s conceptual continuum for our definition of a culturally proficienty human being:

  • Views global citizenship and intercultural learning from perspectives of global interconnection—among people, their ideas, and actions—and between people and the environment
  • Views inclusion as embodying and giving voice to diverse individuals and groups
  • Views group identities as dynamic, reflecting on how these continue to be shaped through intergroup engagement
  • Uses the institution’s diversity to inform and drive engagement and collaboration
  • Adapts in response to diverse backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, worldviews, and languages
  • Navigates diversity and difference and affirms universal values of humanity.
