Co-curricular Programmes
VIS strives to promote empathy and belonging within our school community and beyond it.
VIS is working to promote Spanish language learning and to extend our commitment to cultural proficiency through Erasmus funded trips to Spain. This year we accompanied students to Murcia and Valencia for school visits.
VIS and the care home ‘Senevita’ have been service learning partners since 2012. We visit multiple times a year with service projects integrated into our curriculum goals. Grade 5 students recently put on a variety show for their senior friends. Grade 6 students learn about sports adaptations for different age groups in P.E. and then organise an annual sports day for the seniors.
Our most lauded event happens in grade 8 with an interdisciplinary unit in which students explore memoirs in English class and learn portrait drawing in Art. Students then interview the residents in English, Lithuanian, Russian and even Spanish to record their life stories, eventually writing them up in the structure of a memoir which is accompanied by a portrait of the resident.
DofE started as part of a student initiated personal project. It has since become a point of pride at VIS as students work over the course of grade 9* to meet service goals as well as prepare for a 24 km hike and unsupervised overnight. Many thanks to our DofE coordinators, Mr. Povilas and Ms. Rūta for their tireless commitment to outdoor learning and civic education.
*Grade 9 students choose from one of three co-curricular activities: Ted X Youth, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze or Changemaker Challenge.
Students run an annual TedxYouth event. This event provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in marketing, event planning, production, and curating a relevant and engaging roster of speakers. The theme for the 2024-2025 school year is “Eternal Bloom.” Several VIS students are making their public speaking debut.
VIS students have participated in Model United Nations and more recently, Model European Parliament and Model NATO. This year we had 40 upper school students spend their Saturday at VIS for an internally organised event that will provide the Committee Chair persons (experienced Upper School Students) with insights into who VIS will send to the upcoming Baltic MEP event.
