SCIENCE FAIR, March 6 Our 1st Science Fair was a great success! The youngest students - our Pre-K 4- showed the experiment on floating and sinking objects – at first, they predicted whether the objects would float or sink in the water and then they actually put it into the bowl to see if they right. In most cases, the predictions were correct, but there were some oops! moments… Well, now they know that oil does float in the water! The kindergarten group developed a tremendous project on the Solar system – our guests could admire a mini-model of the Solar systems with glow-in-the-dark planets and stars, and the walls hosted all Solar systems planets, each designed in a fantastic way! You could even touch the fluffy Uranus, coated with gases, the red Mars, or even the flames of the Sun! The 1st graders boasted with their Weather station, the 2nd graders presented 11 (!) projects focusing on water issues – storage, ice cubes, icebergs, evaporation- flora and fauna, such a presentation on a variety of cacti or polar animals, and many many other exciting things. The 3rd grade had spent two months exploring the world of investigators and investigation and, surely, for the Fair, they had a lot to tell about Charles Darwin, Igor Sikorsky, Morse code development and many other famous people and their inventions. Our 4-, 5- and 6th graders surprised us with more than 20 thorough studies on such relevant issues as, for instance, energy – water and electricity – or corrosion. The Fair visitors were impressed to see the floating pillow experiment, learn about the healthy food pyramid, how lightning can be dangerous, how metals can be affected by water, or watch the fun tornado-in-the bottle experiment. Each VIS student who took part in the fair received a certificate. We were impressed by the work of all VIS students involved in the Science Fair and would like to thank all the teachers who helped the students achieve such outstanding results in the field of science and prepare for the Fair! KAZIUKO MUGĖ (Kaziukas Fair), March 6 Every year in the first week of spring, the Old City of Vilnius hosts the famous Kaziukas Fair. This year, it is on March 6-8. Kaziukas Fair is an old national festival originally meant to glorify St. Kazimir, the patron saint of Lithuania. Now, the fair is a three-day celebration attracting hundreds of craftspeople not only from Lithuania, but from neighbour countries as well. Thousands of the fair visitors flood the Old City to get hand-made souvenirs – ceramics, metal and wood products, toys, woven tablecloths and towels. The symbol of Kaziukas Fair is a verba – Easter palms designed as a colourful bunch of dry flowers and herbs, tied to a twig. At Vilnius International School, we have a tradition to host our own Kaziukas Fair, too. Our little artists prepared amazing souvenirs for the fair - Easter cards and verbas, drawings and paintings, ceramic and wooden toys, fridge magnets, picture frames and many other different things. For sure, at our Kaziukas Fair you will find something nice and precious to take home. The young artists are looking forward to the Fair as well – make sure you have enough sweets and cookies with you to pay for the souvenirs! The VIS Kaziukas Fair opens on March 6, immediately after the Science Fair presentations are finished (around 15.30). As soon as all the VIS students are finished with their presentation at the Science Fair, get ready to visit each class to buy the crafts they have made themselves. Don‘t forget your cameras!
